A couple weeks ago I did a boudoir session for the owner of Paige Elizabeth Day Spa in Canton. She was telling me about spray tanning and after seeing how well hers turned out my attitude changed. I use to hate spray tans because I have never seen a good one. I always end up spending hours fixes skin that was orange or editing around elbows and knees because it was blotchy. However, last week I honestly saw the best spray tan I have ever come across during my sessions and my mind if changed, you can get a good spray tan!!
So, because I know my clients want to look hot for their session I asked her to do a feature for me and share a little for you readers. I think anyone will find this helpful!
Many people associate spray tanning being with orange and looking like an oompa loompa, well welcome to the year 2011! Just like everything else, sunless airbrush tanning has come a very long way! It now looks just as natural as laying in the sun or a tanning bed.. without the skin damage, time and money involved, expensive tanning lotions and danger of skin cancer! Sunless airbrush tanning, otherwise known as spray tanning, is now the future of the beauty industry. Women of all ages are desiring a sunless tan that is natural looking and will last for special occasions, dances, vacations and even weddings. Mothers are now bringing their daughters before high school dances and proms rather than sending them into a tanning bed, women are coming weekly to maintain their tan, and even skin cancer survivors are coming in to change their habits, lifestyle and reduce future skin damage…not to mention look fabulous all the while! You can be sure you will get compliments on your spray tan and people asking, “Where did you go on vacation?”
A few of my Tips and Tricks for the perfect sunless tan!
*Exfoliate and shave the night before. This helps remove dead skin cells and keep your tan longer!
*Avoid using any moisturizer before your spray tan, this will create a barrier between the spray tan solution and your skin which will cause the solution to not be absorbed into the skin properly.
*Wear dark, loose fitted clothing and undergarments to your tanning appointment. The cosmetic bronzer may rub off on your clothing. It will wash out of most fabrics but may stain nylons, lycra and silks.
*Apply a moisturizer morning and evening after your post-tan shower. This will help avoid dry skin which will cause your tan to fade faster. Avoid moisturizers with AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) because they promote exfoliation.
*Avoid hot baths and hot tubs to make your tan last as long as possible.
*Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs can remove or shorten the life of your tan.
*Avoid using body scrubs until you are ready to exfoliate the excess tan off of your skin.
*Aggressive exercise and excess sweat may cause your tan to fade prematurely.
*Make sure to wear an SPF while you are in the sun. Even though you appear tan you can still burn!
*Use a baby oil or vaseline based barrier cream on the bottoms of your feet, palms of your hands and around your nails to protect the skin from absorbing spray tan solution in these unwanted areas. This is my newest trick and works perfect every time!
*Wipe hands and feet off with a damp towel post spray tan to ensure no solution will be develop on these areas.
*Do not go straight to bed after your tan! Clients and myself included have learned the hard way by waking up with a brown palm! If you go straight to bed without letting the solution dry for an hour or two you may wake up with spray tan in unwanted places! If you sleep on your side, you may put your hand between your knees while you are sleeping, leaving you with a white mark on your knee and a brown mark on your palm! Lesson learned.
*Don’t wash the tops of your hands in the sink after your tan until you first shower! It will be a tell-tale sign that your tan is not real when you have a stripe across your wrist!
*All solution times vary but my solution requires six hours until you can shower. When you do shower, it will appear as though it is washing off in the shower, but don’t worry! This is just the instant bronzer, your skin will be beautifully tan when you get out! Be careful when you towel dry your skin, don’t rub, just blot. Rubbing the skin will cause it to slough off quicker! The more careful you are the longer your tan will last! Moisturize after showering and re-moisturize throughout the day to keep your tan glowing and keep your skin hydrated!
